How to replace the tap without blocking the water

Often there is a need instead of an old faucet, which has ceased to hold water, to insert a new faucet into the water riser. It seems that there should not be any problems: you turn out or cut off your fittings with a grinder, electric or gas welding, and you screw or weld a new analogue in its place.

Yes, this will be so, if there is an opportunity to turn off the water using another tap or valve. But most often they are not, and if there are, then they have long failed and do not fulfill their direct functions, that is, they do not hold water. Sometimes, as a result of numerous reconstructions of a building, alterations or redevelopments, it is possible that their location was even forgotten or it turned out to be completely inaccessible.

It seems that the situation has created a hopeless situation. However, do not despair. Now we will try to implement our plans with the help of simple and affordable tools and materials and, nevertheless, to install a new product instead of the old crane.

Used materials and tools

For this work, we need the following tools and materials:

  • an adjustable wrench in order to turn out the old, old, crane;

  • open-end wrench or spanner of the appropriate size;

  • squeezing (a piece of pipe with a thread at one end);

  • FUM tape;

  • special device for blocking water in the drain of the riser;

  • Bulgarian;

  • welding machine;

  • new crane.

It is probably necessary to briefly describe the design of the device for shutting off water and its operation. It is a stud, on one end of which a valve made of elastic material is fixed - a piece of rubber hose, on the other - a nut is wound. And between them is a piece of pipe, where the pin freely enters. The length of the pipe should be shorter than the portion of the stud from the valve to about the middle of the thread, so that after installing the device in the right place, it is possible to tighten the nut on the stud and, thereby, compress the elastic valve, sealing the annular gap between it and the inner wall of the riser pipe.

Pressure tap replacement process

Since it was not possible to turn off the water, it was hardly restrained under pressure by an old faucet, which could give an even greater leak at any moment. It is necessary to act very quickly and very desirable together.

It should be as quick as possible, using an adjustable wrench, unscrew the used crane and insert it, overcoming the pressure of water, into the tap of the sealing device to the required depth.

Then, holding it in the pipe, use a wrench to tighten the nut on the fixture rod until water stops flowing from the gap between the steel process and the fixture.

Now you can, without fear of leaks, cut off part of the tap with a grinder. Moreover, the place of the cut must be planned, not reaching the section where the valve of the device seals the outlet of the riser. After complete separation, a piece of pipe should be carefully removed without affecting the fixture.

To imagine how the new crane will be located on the pipe, it can be tried on the spot by placing the lamb above, side or bottom to determine the most convenient position during operation.

The next stage is very responsible: it is necessary to weld the branch to the branch using electric welding, to which we will later screw a new crane. Before welding, for a reliable connection at the end of the cut pipe, you can use a metal file to make a small chamfer. On drives, it is usually already available. This will allow the weld to lie well in the formed recess and ensure the quality, tightness and reliability of the connection.

After the ridge cools down, it should be wound in the direction of screwing, i.e., several layers of FUM tape, clockwise. This will increase the tightness of the new crane on the drive and the tightness of the junction. The screw must be screwed on with the effort of one hand, slowly and carefully, especially at first, in order to get into the thread and not accidentally tear it. At the very end, you can do a tightening with a key, but at a small angle.

After the final installation of a new crane, it is time to unscrew the sealing device. It is necessary to use a wrench to loosen the nut and slightly push the rod towards the riser to release the elastic element in the longitudinal direction, which will allow it to elongate, and thus decrease in cross section. Now, without delay, we take out the device, swinging it from side to side, and quickly close the new valve. Work completed successfully.

Conclusion

The device for sealing pipes should be checked before use, especially if it has not been used for a long time. The elastic element acting as a valve should not have cracks and gusts. The threads on the shaft must be cleaned of dust, dirt, rust and greased with some oil. Then drive the nut several times from end to end.

Instead of FUM tape, it is preferable to use a universal nylon cord impregnated with a special sealing compound to seal the thread between the drive and the crane. It is more reliable, not afraid of cold and heat, not weakened by vibration.

In this way, it is not recommended to change the faucet in the riser with hot water. And in general, if you have at least some opportunity to block the riser, then you should use it, and use this method only as a last resort.
